A FORMER soldier says he will disregard an order by a council in south-east Queensland to lower his Australian flag, after a neighbour complained it was ``offensive''.
A Logan City resident erected a five metre flagpole eight weeks ago to honour friends who served in Iraq.
On Tuesday, council staff at Logan City just south of Brisbane contacted him to tell him a neighbour had complained and was told he could face legal action if the flagpole was not removed.
``I find it astonishing that anyone could find the Australian flag offensive,'' he said.
"My family and friends have served for the country and the very least I can do is have a flag to show my appreciation for Australia.''
A Logan City Council spokeswoman said there was concern the flagpole could fall down in high winds.
She said he needed a building permit, because the pole was only 4.5m from the kerb and, under the Queensland Development Code, it should be at least 6m from the front.
He said he would not be moving the flag.
``I can't see how moving the flag back a bit is going to stop it being offensive,'' he said.

the world and this country is going down the toilet cam. it's am embarassment to be patriotic and apparently it somehow makes me 'racist'. well fuck that.
quite frankly, anyone who isn't proud of this fantastic country and our freedom to be who we are should not have the luxury of living here.
there are plenty of people from overseas desperate for their spot who will be quite fucking pleased to look at our flag.

I totally agree with Kitty. Why TF is it uncool to be patriotic? Maybe Aussies *are* too laid back.
oh yeah but then if the flag pole falls down and hurts someone then the council is blamed?

Why the fuck does he want to fly the flag. Misguided sense of patriotism much? I'm sure there are other things they he can do like paint his car with the Australian flag or some other bullshit.

I'm sure there's more than meets the eye in this conflict between neighbours.
There's no way anyone can reasonably call our flag "offensive". If however, the raising of the flag were accompanied by racist taunts, then I would find that "offensive". I found it offensive when drunken yobbos at Cronulla wrapped themselves in our flag and then bashed anyone who didn't look white enough. I felt ashamed when pictures of these events were beamed around the world.
I'm concerned that the person who erected this flagpole could be just escalating a stupid neighbourhood spat. While no-one should be allowed to vilify our flag, no-one should be allowed to use our flag as a psychological weapon either.
BTW, I don't think the Logan Council are calling the flagpole "offensive". They are calling it "illegal" because it was erected without a permit and contravenes the building code. Should it fall down and injure someone on council property, the lawyers will have a piece of them.
Also BTW, I'm an ex-cavalry troop leader from the same unit as 41-yr-old father of two, David Pearce, killed in Afghanistan.
